Interdisciplinary CSL course 1: defining challenges in a multi stakeholder context

The interdisciplinary CSL 1 course welcomes Master's students from any disciplinary background to engage with societal issues that are complex of nature, and consequently often remain ill-defined. However, without a clear problem definition you will never find solutions. That is why, in this course you will define challenges together with the actors involved. Defining the question is the first step towards an answer.

About the course: urban transitions
The Interdisciplinary Community Service Learning 1 (iCSL1) course aims to drive urban transitions; we make crucial changes in our city to contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). 

It's not just about individual solutions in energy, mobility, circularity, and other areas. Instead, it's about understanding how these solutions integrate into the urban system and interact with one another. 

In this course we will focus on three themes: 1) sustainable energy systems; 2) urban healthy food systems; 3) inclusive public spaces for mental strength.

What will you do in this course?

✓ Explore different viewpoints on real-world challenges, from:

      • Different academic fields, through you fellow students' diverse disciplinary backgrounds
      • Non-academic actors, such as citizens, policy makers, and other stakeholders

✓ Reflect on the similarities, differences and frictions between these viewpoints

✓ Creatively integrate the diverse viewpoints, e.g. by using art, music and literature

What will you learn?
This course will provide you with new insights and a deeper understanding of the relations between theories and practice. You will develop career-oriented skills, such as critical thinking, problem solving and cultural understanding. You will be able to identify and integrate various societal issues and the perspectives of different societal actors in practice, though co-creation in real-life situations. Thereby, you will learn how a transdisciplinary approach can contribute to research directions for current societal challenges.

  • Admission

    Every Master's student is eligible to take part in this course. We have students from many different universities, a large variety of disciplines and all kinds of Master's programmes. 

  • Period

    This course runs in period 2: from November till December.

  • ECTS

    Completing this course results in 3 ECTS credits. 

    If your own programme’s curriculum and exam board allow, you can include this course in your study plan as an elective. If not, then you can take this course extracurricularly. In either case you will receive credits upon the successful completion of the course, and the course can be added to your Master's diploma. Contact your own programme’s coordinator or study advisor to discuss the possibilities.
