About the Course
Welzijn in de Wijk is an 8-week immersive course, taught in P5, designed to bridge the gap between academic knowledge and real-world community health challenges. This course empowers students to work in small subgroups on a project commissioned by community organizations. These projects span a variety of crucial themes, including well-being, healthcare, livability, and other public health-related topics.
The students participating in this course come from the bachelor's programs Health and Life Sciences and Health Sciences, and include 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-year students. The course is part of the Faculty of Science at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
This Year's Exciting Collaboration: De Kwekerij
This year, the students collaborate with De Kwekerij, an initiative dedicated to supporting young adults (and others) in their personal and professional development. In a society where time and performance pressures are ever-present, De Kwekerij provides a much-needed space for mental well-being and growth. However, to maximize their impact, it is essential to gain deeper insights into their effectiveness, the barriers and facilitators to participation, and the overall contribution to the community.
Making a Real Difference
Welzijn in de Wijk equips students with the skills and knowledge to conduct meaningful research within the community. Through a small qualitative study, students will delve into the experiences and impacts of De Kwekerij, providing insights that can help enhance their initiatives. This hands-on approach not only benefits the community but also enriches the students' learning experience.
Reflective Learning
Throughout the course, students are encouraged to reflect on their work, group dynamics, and the research process by maintaining a reflection portfolio. This reflective practice is integral to their personal and professional growth, fostering a deeper understanding of the complexities of community health issues, as well as their role as health researchers.
