Performing medicine by putting research into practice

Medical Research to Clinical Practice

Within clinicians and medical students, there is a growing awareness that medical research is the key to good clinical practice. Not only knowledge but also practical experience is important. Because of this growing awareness, the minor Medical Research into Clinical Practice has been developed. The minor consists of two parts: theory and practice.

In the theoretical part, the students learn and discuss the background of medical research, on how to set-up, conduct and analyze medical research. All research starts with writing a solid research proposal. Fundamental statistics are explained as a tool to analyze your data and attention is paid on how to report the outcome in a scientific presentation.

In the practical part, the students will learn how to apply the theory in daily practice as they will perform medical research at a medical department in the VUmc (or of own choice of the student) which is embedded in one of the research institutes of the Amsterdam UMC.

The final product of the medical research will be written during the Bachelor Thesis and results in a manuscript which might form the basis for a scientific publication.

The minor (24 or 30 EC) consists of two components:

  • One of the 13 minor-modules (24 EC) of your choice
  • Tracks of 30 EC will be completed with a literature essay (6 EC)

NB: Exchange students who wish to apply for one of these tracks need to have completed at least 90 EC in a relevant program, like for example in medicine, biomedicine, psychobiology, technical medicine, medical biology, liberal arts & sciences or biopharmaceutical sciences.
