Dive into Classical Antiquity and its impact on later cultures

Highlights of the Ancient World

Understanding the ancient world and its enduring significance from an interdisciplinary angle

The minor Highlights of the Ancient World is about the cultures of the ancient world, including the Greeks, Romans, Babylonians, Persians, Israelites and others. It also discusses the impact of ancient ideas, texts and works of art on later times.

You will gain basic knowledge about the most important cultural and historical developments in the ancient Mediterranean and Near East through various periods of Antiquity. You will become acquainted with the analysis of cultural-historical problems from an interdisciplinary angle, making use of textual as well as material sources. You will also gain insight in processes of cultural transfer and transformation. Our study of these processes will not be limited to the ancient world, but will also include the reception of Classical culture in medieval, early modern and contemporary times.

The Classical Canon 1, The Decline and Fall of Rome and Religion in Antiquity are mandatory. Most courses take place at the UvA campus in the city centre of Amsterdam. Also the registration for this courses takes place at the UvA. Please read the information under 'admissions' carefully.
