Understand the causes of cardiovascular disease

CVR challenges: Pathological interactions between the cardiovascular and other organ systems

During this minor basic (preclinical) and clinical scientists will highlight the recent advancements in understanding causes of cardiovascular disease, which not only involve the heart and vasculature, but also the complex interactions between other organ systems (lungs, kidneys). A brief overview will be given on the physiology of organ systems, after which pathophysiologic mechanisms of different forms of heart failure, atrial fibrillation and genetic cardiomyopathies will be discussed. In addition, emphasis will be put on the heart-kidney and heart-lung interactions, and the relation between obesity and diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

The minor is composed of various topics, which are related to research themes within the Amsterdam Cardiovascular Sciences (ACS) research institute. In interactive lectures and working groups, knowledge will be gained about state-of-the-art diagnosis tools (imaging, biomarkers), and current and new treatment options.

The minor (24 or 30 EC) consists of two components:

  • The minor-module CVR challenges: Pathological interactions between the cardiovascular and other organ systems (24 EC)
  • Tracks of 30 EC will be completed with a literature essay (6 EC)

NB: Exchange students who wish to apply for one of these tracks need to have completed at least 90 EC in a relevant program, like for example in medicine, biomedicine, psychobiology, technical medicine, medical biology, liberal arts & sciences or biopharmaceutical sciences.
