The society in which we live is extremely complex. Each day, you are bombarded with countless stimuli from the outside world. You are continuously influenced by social media and even more so by the people around you. What do you do when you are confronted with a death in your family? Why do people hoard toilet paper? Do you work to live or live to work? If you choose to study philosophy at VU Amsterdam, you will examine a wide range of issues that you encounter in everyday life. You will further develop your sense of curiosity and, together with your fellow students, you will explore possible answers to complex questions.
You will study the wisdom of philosophers such as Plato, Kant, Foucault and Aristotle. You will learn how they apply reasoning and what that means for the outcome of discussions with your fellow students. You can also specialise in medical ethics, which has to do with issues of life and death. Then, you might look at what can happen when patients manage their own health with AI. Are you interested in law and justice in legal proceedings? Then VU Amsterdam is the place to be. If you choose philosophy, you should enjoy having discussions, unravelling issues and seeing if a new answer can emerge. Learning philosophy lets you shine a different light on compelling questions and helps you to uncover new and well-founded answers.
