Tuition fees
Tuition fees for PhD candidates are currently € 10,000 for the first year and € 6,000 for subsequent years. The tuition fee does not include travel, accommodation, study materials, thesis printing, insurance, living and incidental costs. However, up to € 2,000 of the tuition for the first year will be available for the costs of conferences and courses outside Vrije Universiteit during later years. The fee can be waived, in part or in its entirety, if special conditions apply, such as: in-kind payment through, e.g., assistance in research or teaching; special agreements with the institution or country of origin of the candidate. The cost of living for the average student coming to the Netherlands is approximately € 16,000 per year. Scholarships are available from Dutch, EU and home governments, industry and non-governmental organizations. Alternatively – or in parallel – one may consider applying for a temporary staff position on a pre-determined topic and project (see vacancies).
