W&N gebouw

The W&N building exists for no less than 60 years. Because the building no longer meets today's requirements for housing high-quality education and research, demolition of the building is necessary.

Demolition of (part of) W&N is necessary due to the technical obsolescence of the building. The first visible work in preparation for demolition started in 2024. Read more on vu.nl/demolition.

The VU Campus is in the process of developing future-proof replacements for the W&N building. Such as the already commissioned O|2 Lab Building, the New University Building, the VU Research Building and the renovation of the AB wing of W&N.

AB wing to become independent building

Most of the W&N building will be demolished. The AB wing of some 13,000 m2 will be retained and renovated with the aim of functioning as an independent building for another 15 years or so.

The W&N building also contained the Cyclotron - the part on the Buitenveldertselaan/A.J. Ernststraat side. That is demolished and the activities will now be carried out in Amsterdam UMC's new Imaging Centre.

Users W&N building

The W&N building was completed in 1964 and has been used by Beta departments for the most part ever since. It also houses, among others, the Amsterdam Venture Studios and the Dialogue, Debate and Diversity Centre (3D).

All users will have new accommodation that meets functional, sustainability and spatial requirements needed for their high-quality research and education.
