Dialogue between science and society is more important yet more challenging than ever. The urgent societal issues we are facing today, such as global warming, poverty, and migration, require science to open up to societal perspectives. While the need for science-society collaboration and communication is growing, polarization and contestation of scientific knowledge in society seems to be more pressing every day. It is time to rethink the science-society relationship and foster dialogue.

Dive deep into the essence of public conversations about science. Improve your understanding of the interplay between science and society shaping public communication. Learn about tools, strategies, and insights to develop an open dialogue attitude and participate in meaningful conversations about science in society.

If you are a VU employee, become part of the transformative dialogue training program, consisting of four dialogue workshops in the period October – November 2023. Registration is free.

The workshops are hosted by Amsterdam Sustainability Institute and facilitated by Athena Institute.

Transformative Dialogue Training Workshops

  • Opening up Science to Society: The Need for Dialogue

    Monday 30 October, 14:00 – 17:00

Do you want to gain knowledge and understanding about why science-society dialogue is important, especially in relation to societal issues that are complex, uncertain and contested? We help you rethink the relation between science and society, including your role as a public engagement professional or engaged scholar. Collectively, we will explore new roles of scientists in the public arena required to navigate the complexities of our issues of today. Walk away with actionable insights for fostering meaningful dialogue on pressing issues.

This event is for VU employees only. Register here until 26 October.

  • The Art of Dialogue: Improve Your Communication and Facilitation Skills

    Friday 10 November, 09:30 – 13:00

Discover the openness and humility of a dialogue attitude. With the help of playful improvisation and theatre techniques, you develop dialogue skills to enhance your conversations about science. This includes active listening, perspective taking and co-creating new ideas. The first step is to learn how to participate in meaningful conversations. The next step: design and facilitate dialogue yourself!

This event is for VU employees only. Register here until 8 November.

  • Science Communication Under Pressure: Scientists' Survival Guide for the Public Arena

    Friday 24 November, 09:30 – 12:30

What happens when you enter the public arena as a scientist? How do you deal with value-driven discussions, strong reactions, or distrust? Challenge your assumptions and focus on what you can do differently to broaden your options in public conversations. Embrace uncertainty and disagreement as a valuable resource for change. Explore the possibility of dialogue to engage in meaningful conversations authentically and effectively.

This event is for VU employees only. Register here until 21 November.

  • The New University: A Shared Vision for Change

    Friday 8 December, 14:00-17:00

In response to the complex challenges of the world, universities are opening up to engage in open dialogue with society. This means collaboration across boundaries is becoming more important, and that we need change agents to drive the transition. The imperative of engagement requires us to rethink the roles and relations of universities in society. There is a need for new processes and structures to integrate participation and dialogue in research with and for society. Join us to co-create a shared vision of the university of the future.

This event is for VU employees only. Register here.
