Food and drinks on Campus

From the first cup of coffee in the morning to a delicious hot meal at the end of the day: VU campus has a wide variety of cafés and restaurants to satisfy any craving. 

A welcoming, vibrant campus where people spend more and more time should boast a wide variety of coffee corners and restaurants, i.e. Bar BoeleDoppio Espresso, Science Café (O|2 Lab building) and Grand Café LIVING. The VU restaurants offer a broad variety of lunch items, see VU catering. The restaurant in the Main Building serves warm meals.

  • VU Main building

    Coffee Corner

    Vitam, in collaboration with Anne&Max, runs the coffee corner. Here you can enjoy organic specialty coffee, fresh juices, breakfast, sandwiches, salads, and other healthy options to go.

    • The Anne&Max To-Go Coffee Corner is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
    • Social Foodhall Restaurant (basement) is open Monday through Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

    Main Building Restaurant

    Vitam offers a sustainable, diverse, and healthy menu, with 70% of the selection being vegetarian.

    Order Catering (Banqueting)

  • New University building

    In the NU building, you’ll find “The Colour Café,” which is run by The Colour Kitchen. The Colour Café features a social coffee bar, a Grab & Go food counter with artisanal offerings, and a refrigerated display case with chilled Grab & Go items.

    People who face barriers to the labor market work here as they take steps toward sustainable employment: Social Return.

    The Colour Café in the Atrium is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on weekends from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

  • MF building

    The restaurant in the MF building is making way for a lunch and coffee corner run by The Colour Kitchen. Here, fresh dishes are served daily from the open kitchen and counter. The Colour Kitchen employs people who face barriers to the job market.

    Students from ROC are also trained here. This collaboration between VU Amsterdam, The Colour Kitchen, and ROC provides a learning and development environment on the VU campus where students gain work experience and develop skills.

    The coffee corner offers high-quality coffee and Grab & Go products and provides support during peak times in the restaurant. The restaurant and the coffee corner together form a single concept.

    • The Colour Kitchen lunch and coffee corner is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • Research building VU

    The coffee corner in the Research Building is closed. For coffee and snacks, you can use the coffee corners in the Main building and MF.

  • OZW building

    The coffee corner in the OZW building is currently undergoing renovations. Starting in the spring of 2027, you’ll also find the “Social Coffee Club” here, run by Vitam. It will be a coffee corner offering a seasonal, all-day selection (Grab & Go).

    In the meantime, Vitam will provide a mobile coffee and tea service with budget-friendly options and combo deals.

  • O|2 Lab building

    Science Café on the ground floor offers a small menu with breakfast, lunch and drinks options (non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks). This location is also ideally suited for hosting drinks parties. The Science Café is open Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 17:00.Adjusted opening hours for the 2026 summer period

  • ACTA

    In the O|2 Lab building, you’ll find “Morgenland,” a coffee corner. Morgenland is run by Memories of Damascus, an organization with a personal story. Founder Mohamad Habanakeh grew up in Damascus. After fleeing Syria, he started Memories of Damascus, which operates with a multicultural team and creates opportunities for people who don’t automatically have access to employment.

    Approximately 75% of Memories of Damascus employees belong to or come from a Social Return target group, including status holders, refugees, young people with limited opportunities, and people re-entering the workforce.

    Morgenland is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Vending machines at VU Amsterdam

  • Hot drinks vending machines

    The hot drinks vending machines serve coffee, chocolate milk and hot water. The vending machines are operated using a VU card with coffee rights (VU employees) or a debit card with contactless payment (non-VU employees, students and visitors). The coffee rights are put directly on the VU pass; this does not need to be requested separately. Management of the vending machines is outsourced. 

    Coffee vending machines for office tenants

    Upon request, it is also possible for tenants (external parties) to have a coffee machine placed in their own (private) working area. Here, criteria and conditions for placement apply. Costs are passed on. Agreements are recorded in writing. If you would like more information, please contact FCO Servicedesk.

    Oat milk

    Every building has a coffee machine with oat milk. The locations of coffee machines with oat milk are:

    * New University Building 2C-33
    * Initium 1B-88
    * BelleVUe 0H-00
    * Transitorium ground floor
    * O|2 Lab Building ground floor 0W-00 

    There are also coffee machines with oat milk in the Main Building (HG-B0 opposite Mainstreet and HG 1A-18) and MF Building (D-014).

  • Snacks, sweets and soft drinks

    Scattered across the VU Campus you will find vending machines with sweets, snacks and soft drinks. You will find the vending machines on the ground floor of the buildings and 'in busy places', such as large lecture halls or study areas. Use of the vending machines is at your own expense and payment is contactless with your bank card.

  • Report malfunction

    See a vending machine that is not working? Please report it. Remember to pass on the vending machine number (shown in the vending machine's display) and location, and turn over the fault card on the vending machine so that others can see that the fault has been reported. The fault will be solved as soon as possible by.

    • VU staff or students in possession of a VUnet ID pass on the report via the Service portal. You can see the progress of your report via the My reports overview in your dashboard.
    • Don't have a VUnet ID? Then submit your report via the External Service portal.

Catering industry

  • Grand café LIVING

    Grand café LIVING can be found on the ground floor of the New University Building. LIVING has a sunny terrace on campus square. A quick coffee or a full breakfast, a laptop session with tasty benefits, a business dinner or a drink with friends; you are welcome at Grand café LIVING.

  • Doppio Espresso

    Doppio Espresso stands for passion for coffee and fresh and natural products. You can enjoy a delicious espresso, cappuccino, or latte. 

    Doppio Espresso offers an ideal base to enjoy coffee while studying or to just relax and catch up. There is free WiFi and plenty of power outlets. In addition to espresso, cappuccino and coffee specials, they offer also breakfast, lunches and pastries.

  • Bar Boele

    Bar Boele is the cultural hotspot of the VU Campus and is located in the New University Building at De Boelelaan 1111. Bar Boele is associated with the Rialto VU cinema and Griffioen theatre, which are also housed in this building.
