Election Time: Social Security & Housing Market

How do we make sure that everyone matters? How do we deal with inflation and loss of purchasing power? What is needed for sustainable poverty reduction and fair income distribution? How can we all find affordable housing, have opportunities and choices on the job market, pay off our study debts or energy bills, have access to healthcare and have sufficient income to live on?

Social security and poverty are hot topics in the upcoming elections. We increasingly struggle to find a job with sufficient income, good housing, or affordable care. According to CPB research, without additional policy, one million Dutch people risk ending up in poverty.  

Moreover, social inequality is an important theme within our university. It is one of the themes that, even outside election time, we are committed to as a university in research and education. Our researchers pays a lot of attention to inequality in education and the environment you grow up in.

The housing market is under pressure: what can we do?

With the pressing shortage of affordable housing and rising home prices, housing is a top priority in the upcoming Dutch parliamentary elections. According to Hans Koster, Professor of Urban Economics and Real Estate at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, the housing crisis is complex due to a lack of clear short-term solutions. "Many policy measures do not address the core issue, namely the housing shortage."
