On Thursday, 19 November 2026, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam will celebrate its 146th Dies Natalis. This year’s theme is: The Art of Discomfort.
As a university of free thinkers, we believe that new insights emerge when different perspectives come together. But how do we deal with those differences, with uncertainty and with conflicting realities? Are we willing to listen when someone sees the world in a fundamentally different way?
After all, freedom for everyone means that we do not always have to agree with one another. It requires us not to avoid discomfort, but to learn how to navigate it.
Engaging with that discomfort is the common thread running through the Dies Natalis. Through art, science and personal stories, the programme invites curiosity, reflection and dialogue.
