Restored Reformed Seminary

The Restored Reformed Seminary (HHS) belongs to the Reformed Church of the Netherlands Continuiting. Therefore, the programme is aligned with the church’s requirements to become a pastor in this church. Then again, about half the number of students have other plans. Some belong to another denomination. Other students want to become religious educators or Bible translators. Studying theology will provide you deeper insight into the questions of faith anyhow.

The Restored Reformed Seminary is characterized by an orthodox Reformed profile and a spiritual-experiential slant. Our presence at VU Amsterdam shows that we want to take seriously all questions from our current culture and modern theological developments in order to seek biblical-reformed answers to them.

More about studying at the Restored Reformed Seminary

  • Studying at the Seminary

It is also possible to pursue a minor at HHS. The minor in the Reformed Seminary is theological and approaches the actualization of classical Reformed theology from an ethical, practical, historical, hermeneutical and apologetic perspective.

  • What will you learn?

The HHS makes up forty per cent of a VU Amsterdam degree of theology. In the HHS programme you will receive biblical theology, hermeneutics, systematic theology, practical theology, ethics, church history and church law, and apologetics.

  • Teachers

At HHS, lectures are given by the following teachers:

    1.           VU Professor Pieter de Boer provides the Bible-related subjects, exegesis and hermeneutics.

    2.           VU Professor Peter Hoek teaches pastorate, liturgy, homiletics and catechetics.

    3.          Associate Professor Jan van de Kamp is responsible for the history of the Reformation and the history of Pietism.

    4.           Maarten Muilwijk is in charge of the subject Latin.

    5.           J.L. Schreuders is responsible for the subject Church Law.

    6.           Bert Jan Spruyt teaches History of the Dutch Church and apologetics.

    7.           VU Professor Wim van Vlastuin teaches the systematic subjects: introduction to systematic theology, Calvin's theology and spirituality, communion with the Triune God, doctrine of grace, renewal and doctrine of baptism. Van Vlastuin is the rector of the Restored Reformed Seminary.

    8. Benno Zuiddam teaches the subject of ethics.
