Contract education FHUM

For those who do not want to or cannot register as a student for a regular program, it is possible at the Faculty of Humanities to participate in individual bachelor and master courses as a contract student.

For contract education a certain level of understanding is required. To participate in bachelor courses (for which no specific entrance requirements are defined), knowledge at the final exam level of vwo is expected. Unless you can demonstrate this level in another way, you must therefore submit a copy of your vwo diploma (or of the diploma of a higher professional education propaedeutic year) when registering as a contract student. For participation in master courses, you must submit a copy of a wo bachelor degree. For all courses, written permission from the lecturer is required.

Courses

The lecturer determines whether the course is available to contract students. This means not all courses are available for contract students.

A description of the courses can be found in the online study guide https://studiegids.vu.nl. The timetable for each course can be found on the VU timetable website: www.rooster.vu.nl

Exams

At the end of the course period you can participate in the exam and later in the academic year in the re-sit. The exam is  the same as for students taking the subject within their program. If the subject is tested in another way than through a written exam, for example through one or more papers and presentations, these test also apply to contract students.

Exemption when entering the regular program

Subjects obtained through contract education may lead to exemptions within the regular programs. However, there is a maximum. Within a bachelor program you can be exempted with a maximum of 60 EC of subjects obtained as contract student; for a master program this is at most 18 EC.

Costs

The costs for contract education are €100,- per EC for both a bachelor and a master course.
The majority of the courses are 6 EC. One EC represents a study load of approximately 28 hours. The purchase of literature is not included in the price. All books can be purchased through the VU Bookstore.
The fee for the course must be paid at least 10 business days before the course starts. Cancellations can be made till 10 business days before the start of the period in which the course takes place. After this period no refund of the course fee is possible. If cancelled in time, an administration fee of € 50 will be charged.

Registration for contract courses

You can register for one or more courses up to 10 business days before the course starts. Your registration is complete when the full course fee has been paid. You pay this amount by invoice. This invoice will be sent to you by email. We recommend that you pay at least two weeks before the course starts, to ensure timely access to the digital learning environment.

Admission
Admission is by written permission (by email) from the lecturer. Send the e-mail of the written permission together with the application form (see website) by mail to the faculty's education office. The e-mail address can be found on the application form. Without these documents your application cannot be processed.
