The Rights Retention Strategy allows creators to retain copyright of their accepted work (AAM). This allows it to be shared under an open license in a repository, regardless of agreements with the publisher on the final publisher's version (VoR).
What is it?
The Rights Retention Strategy provides a way to retain copyright on your work. This initiative was developed by a coalition of research funders (cOAlition-S). It allows authors to retain rights over the accepted version (AAM) of their work and place it in a repository under an open license, regardless of embargo agreements with the publisher.
How does it work?
When you apply the Rights Retention Strategy, you include a standard statement in the manuscript you submit to a publisher. This statement states that you will apply a CC-BY license (open license) to the accepted version (Author's Accepted Manuscript/AAM). This statement varies by research funder, so always consult the terms and conditions on their website.
Why?
The Rights Retention Strategy:
- ensures that you retain the copyright of the work you have written
- allows you as the author to make your AAM openly available without embargo
- ensures that you as the author can meet the requirements of your research funder
- prevents unforeseen costs (e.g. an APC payment)
