RDM tools

There are quite a few tools available for research data management that make your life as a researcher much easier. Find out more...

Scroll down for an overview of tools VU Amsterdam has to offer.

Find out which RDM tool is suitable for your research project

Whether you have just started writing your data management plan, are in the process of collecting data or need a long-term data storage solution, VU offers several tools to help you optimize your research process. Are you unsure which tool is most suitable for your project? Contact the RDM Support Desk for tailored advice!

RDM Tools

  • Data collection tools

On the data collection LibGuide you can find information on data collection.

    For example:

    • Qualtrics: a web-based survey tool that you can use to distribute surveys for research. The platform is characterised by a great diversity of possible question types and great flexibility in the design of surveys. It offers the possibility to grade surveys, create quizzes for educational purposes, and distribute surveys through several channels. VU has signed an agreement with Qualtrics regarding the use and the protection of data. Qualtrics is now ISO27001 certified, which means that Qualtrics can be used for data that are not extremely sensitive. If you are not sure if you can or should use Qualtrics to collect your data, please e-mail the RDM Support Desk.
  • Data analysis tools

In the data analysis LibGuide you can find an overview of tools for qualitative and quantitative data analysis and the corresponding download options.

VU also offers students and researchers who need more computing power than their own device can provide tools for high performance computing. Visit the HPC LibGuide for more information

VU recommends using open software as much as possible for data analysis, as doing so increases the accessibility, interoperability and reuseability of your data. Visit the data analysis LibGuide for more information on how to do so.

    • For example a way to analyze data is by transcription. Transcription at VU can either be done by Transcript Online or Amberscript. At Transcript Online, experienced transcribers convert speech to verbatim transcriptions. Amberscript offers both automated transcription and transcription by transcribers. For automated transcription, credit per hour can be purchased in advance. For verbatim transcription, a quote will need to be requested. Information about languages, rates and useage for both transcription services can be found on our libguide. For more details see Transcription at VU.
  • Data storage tools

In the data storage LibGuide you can find information on the storage solutions that are supported by VU.

    For example:

If you are unsure which storage solution is best suited for your data, please use the data storage finder. The associated costs depend on the size of your project. You can find more information about the costs for storage and archiving of your research data here.

  • Data classification tools

To help you to determine the data classification for your research data assets, VU has developed a data classification tool that will help you to assess and classify the availability, integrity and confidentiality risks of these assets.

  • Data archiving tools

According to VU RDM Policy, all publication-related data should be archived for at least ten years for verification and replication of research, for example in the VU-recommended RDM applications DataverseNL or Yoda. See the archiving LibGuide for information about archiving research data. The associated costs depend on the size of your project. You can find more information about the costs for storage and archiving of your research data here.
