We onderzoeken de oorzaken van sociale ongelijkheid binnen en tussen landen, wereldwijde migratie en grootschalige verschuivingen in de organisatie van werk. We doen dit expliciet vanuit een mondiaal perspectief en formuleren alternatieven voor traditionele eurocentrische interpretaties van de geschiedenis. We benaderen de relatie tussen mensen, landschap en dieren vanuit een ecologisch, sociaal-economisch en politiek perspectief. Daarnaast combineren we methodologische en conceptuele inzichten uit de geschiedenis en antropologie om tot een beter begrip te komen van het heden en verleden van samenlevingen.
Vragen die we stellen zijn onder meer:
- Wat is de langetermijninvloed van globalisering op sociale ongelijkheid? Hoe hangt kapitalistische ontwikkeling samen met kolonialisme, slavernij en andere grootschalige vormen van dwang, en welke rol spelen verschillen op het gebied van gender, ras en sociale klasse?
- Wat zijn de effecten van grootschalige migratie op arbeidsverhoudingen, kennisoverdracht en sociale bewegingen?
- Hoe beïnvloeden economische veranderingen sociale, politieke en culturele processen, waaronder de vorming van erfgoed en collectief geheugen? Wat kan de mondiale geschiedenis van de sociale wetenschappen ons leren over hoe we naar de wereld kijken?
- Hoe gaan mensen om met klimaatverandering en andere veranderingen in het milieu? Hoe is de natuur een factor in de historische ontwikkeling? Welke rol hebben mondiale milieubewegingen gespeeld bij het creëren van visies en praktijken op het gebied van duurzaamheid?
