Accessibility Week

From October 5 through 10, the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam will be celebrating Accessibility Week.

Accessibility means more than just removing physical and digital barriers; it’s also about mutual understanding and inclusion. VU Amsterdam wants everyone to feel welcome, regardless of their background or circumstances. During Accessibility Week, we’re organizing various events as part of the multi-year program “Studying with a Disability.” The goal is to support both students and staff in finding their way at the VU and to make the VU more accessible for everyone!

This year’s central theme is care. That theme will definitely be featured in our program!

Program

  • Mindfulness, Meditation, and Stimming

    Get introduced to mindfulness, yoga, meditation, and stimming, and discover ways to better manage stress, sensory input, and concentration. Everyone is welcome; no experience is necessary. On Saturdays, there’s a Q&A and sharing session afterward!

    Dates: Wednesday, October 7; Friday, October 9; and Saturday, October 10
    Time: 12:15 – 12:45 p.m. and 5:00 – 5:30 p.m.; on Saturday from 10:00 – 11:00 a.m.

  • Giving education for students with a disability

    Attending classes is a challenge for them. Think of students with rheumatism, ADHD, autism, dyslexia, or other disabilities. If you teach these students, what should you keep in mind? And what can you do for these specific groups in your lecture hall or seminar?
    We’ll explain how the VU supports these students; the characteristics of these target groups; and what you, as an instructor, can do in your lecture hall and seminar. We’ll offer practical tips and open the floor for questions.

  • Workshop: Designing Accessible Education

    The Center for Teaching & Learning recently launched a new course, “Designing Accessible Learning Environments” (DALE), which focuses on three educational models that aim to address this question. Drawing on the VU’s own Mixed Classroom model, the Universal Design for Learning model, and Blended Learning, this workshop provides an introduction to how we—as instructors, students, and educational developers—can address and approach the issue of accessibility.
