Are you a student with a disability? If so, it’s good to know that there are all kinds of organizations outside VU Amsterdam that can help you.

General

Duo The implementing agency of the Dutch national government. Duo supports students, educational institutions, and municipalities by providing funding, information, exams, and data management. The goal: to make high-quality and accessible education possible.

ECIO is a national knowledge center that helps colleges and universities provide more inclusive and accessible education to students who need support—for example, due to autism, ADHD, dyslexia, chronic illness, or mental health challenges.

Handicap.nl is a national organization that supports projects for young people with disabilities. It focuses on independence, mental resilience, assistive devices, and inclusion. It collaborates extensively with schools and municipalities.

The JongPIT Foundation is a national youth organization dedicated to supporting young people with chronic conditions or disabilities—including ADHD, ASD, physical disabilities, and long-term illness. Young people themselves set the direction. JongPIT operates entirely based on experiential expertise.

MEE is an organization that offers free, independent client support to people with a disability, chronic illness, or behavioral challenges, so they can participate in society as independently as possible.

Regelhulp (Ministry of Health, Welfare, and Sport) is a guide to youth services, social support, home care, mental health care, and long-term care. There are many options available, but it can be difficult to find your way.

Neurodiversity

Impuls & Woortblind is the national patient association for people with ADHD, ADD, dyslexia, and dyscalculia. They focus primarily on young people, students, and adults who want to learn to cope with their neurodiversity and feel more confident.

Jados (formerly: Stichting Autismepunt) is a national organization that offers assisted living, academic support, and employment support. They work closely with community colleges, universities, and municipalities.

NVA. The NVA is the Dutch Autism Association, the largest advocacy organization in the Netherlands for people with autism and their loved ones. They are committed to promoting understanding, better support, inclusion, and reliable information about autism.

Villa Abel. Villa Abel in Zeist is a small-scale residential facility for people with an intellectual disability and/or autism, where residents receive support in a quiet, home-like environment.

Chronic Illness

Crohn & Colitis NL. For people with IBD (Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis). Provides information, peer support, and assistance with education and employment.

Physical disability

Stichting Leef Jongeren is a small-scale organization that supports young people with disabilities in achieving independence and offers guidance, daytime activities, and social programs.

Mental Health Issues

Wij zijn MIND is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to the mental health of young people and adults in the Netherlands. They focus on prevention, support, advocacy, and breaking down taboos surrounding mental health issues.

Visual Impairment

Bartiméus is a national organization specializing in support for people who are blind or visually impaired.

Koninklijke Visio, the national center of expertise for people who are visually impaired or blind. It is an organization that provides support, education, rehabilitation, and care to people with visual impairments.
