Summer schools and other opportunities abroad

Last updated on 12 November 2024
Would you like to study abroad for a shorter period of time? Consider following a short programme abroad during the summer months (summer schools), in winter (winter schools) or a single course abroad during the rest of the year (Aurora)

Following (summer school) courses abroad is a great opportunity for students in the first or second year, to already gain international experience and earn extra ECTS at the same time. Most universities offer summer schools from 2 to 8 weeks in many different subject areas and for a broad range of prices.

VU Amsterdam also has 3 exchange Summer School partners where you have the chance to follow courses with a tuition fee waiver. Please find more information on these partners below. Next to these 3 exchange summer schools, there are also many other partner universities that offer summer or winter schools and sometimes, you can get a discount for them if you apply via VU International Office. You can find a PDF with more information on these other options on the right side of this page.

Next to summer school courses, there is also the possibility to follow a single subject at one of our Aurora partner universities abroad at different times of the year. You can find more information on this option below.

  • NWIB Summer School 2023 – Rome, Florence, Athens

Are you a second or third year bachelor student that wants to look beyond the borders of your own field, work with students from other Dutch universities, and develop your academic skills? Fancy doing all this in beautiful Rome, Florence or Athens?

The NWIB, or Dutch Scientific Institutes Abroad in English, are scientific posts of Dutch universities particularly situated around the Mediterranean. The institutes aim to support and realise scientific education and research, and make a substantial contribution to raising the profile of Dutch higher education abroad. In collaboration with Utrecht University the institutes in Rome, Florence and Athens developed an interdisciplinary Summer School for bachelor students, connecting their expertise in (art) history, archaeology and cultural heritage to a wide range of contemporary societal issues. Think of the inherent tension between religious practice and the economic need for tourism, or the complexities surrounding the preservation and ownership of cultural heritage (e.g. the Parthenon Marbles). But we also explore innovative academic themes such as the relationship between art history and medical practice: Can looking at art make you a better doctor or veterinarian?

More information about this summer school opportunity will be published soon.
