VU Emergency Fund
Last updated on 4 July 2026

Are you a student and do you find yourself in urgent financial difficulty due to war, conflict, a natural disaster in your home country, personal circumstances or other unforeseen situations?

VU Amsterdam offers one-off financial support to help you immediately. This support is designed to resolve your situation quickly so that you can fully focus on your studies again.

The financial contribution is intended for essential expenses such as living expenses or rent, but cannot be used to pay tuition fees. Financial support is made possible thanks to donations from the VU fonds, the VU community, alumni and staff.

Check out the terms and conditions below for more information.

  • When can you submit an application?

    If you are in an emergency situation, studying at VU Amsterdam and have paid tuition fees to VU Amsterdam. Or if you are in an emergency situation and otherwise attached to VU Amsterdam and staying in the Netherlands (e.g. through exchange) and if help from your own university cannot be expected, requested or awaited.

  • What is meant by an emergency situation?

    An emergency is defined as a circumstance that meets the following criteria. The emergency situation:

    • was unforeseeable;
    • is acute and there is no solution through the usual provisions or your own network;
    • is occasional and there is no repeated, permanent or structural emergency, for which you have been granted a contribution from the VU Emergency Fund before;
    • is of limited scope: the VU Emergency Fund does not provide for assistance in the form of large sums of money;
    • is solvable: the contribution from the VU Emergency Fund provides a realistic and effective solution through one-off financial support.
  • How to apply for a financial contribution?

    You can submit a request for financial support to the student counsellors. They can be reached using this form. It is also possible to make an appointment with one of the student counsellors directly via the online calendar.

Do you have any questions?

Please contact the student counsellors.
