Become a VU International Student Ambassador

Last updated on 16 January 2025
Are you an international student who wants to help guide prospective students? Become an International Student Ambassador!

As a current student at VU Amsterdam, you have firsthand insights into the university, the Dutch education system, academic workload, and the differences between education here and in your home country. Your experiences and practical tips can help prepare new students for their journey—after all, you’ve been in their shoes before!

As an International Student Ambassador, you will guide prospective international students who have applied or are considering applying to VU Amsterdam by sharing your knowledge and experiences. You will also become part of a vibrant, multicultural community of students and alumni who represent our university globally.

Excited to join the International Ambassador programme? Apply now to become an International Student Ambassador through our application form.

Please note: The programme is open only to international students, meaning you must have been admitted to VU Amsterdam based on previous education outside the Netherlands. If you would like to become a programme ambassador or have a Dutch previous education, please consult the VU ambassador programme page.

Why become an International Student Ambassador?

  • Spruce up your CV

This extracurricular activity will stand out to future employers and you will also receive a personalised certificate upon completing the programme.

Looking for even more opportunities? Become an Honours Ambassador!

  • Join fun events

Throughout the year, we organise a variety of fun get-togethers with the goal of binging together the International Ambassador community.

  • Expand your network

You will get to meet other fellow international students from all over the world, from a variety of different programmes and backgrounds. You will have the opportunity to connect with peers from diverse backgrounds, enhance your cultural understanding and even make lasting friendships.

  • Become an active member of the VU community

As an International Student Ambassador, you will play an active role in engaging with potential future students of VU Amsterdam. Throughout the year, you will also be invited to support various events, such as webinars, pre-departure sessions, open days and more!

  • Improve your presentation skills

There will be numerous opportunities to present at various events and get-togethers, giving you the chance to gain skills that will benefit you in your academic and professional endeavors.

What will you be doing as an International Student Ambassador?

  • Answering questions by prospective students

Your core task will be answering questions that prospective students ask you via Unibuddy. Through this online platform, students can filter according to programme, programme level and country. Often, students search and find you specifically to ask their question(s) because you are from the same country or studying the programme they are interested in.

Questions will vary and as the deadlines approach more questions should be coming your way. Some common topics may include:

    • What is it like to live in the Netherlands and/or Amsterdam?
    • What is it like to study at VU Amsterdam? How does the university's educational system differ from that of your home country?
    • How are you experiencing the Bachelor’s or Master’s programme you are in?
    • Practical information about housing, social activities, finding a job, etc.
  • Giving campus tours

Prospective students may contact you for campus tours. After all, who better to be shown around by that an actual student studying at the university?

As an International Student Ambassador, you can offer a good overview of what the campus and our university has to offer and mostly: what it is like to be a student just like you. What do you think about the teaching style, self-study, group work, lectures and amount of reading material?

  • Assisting during online and on campus events

The International Ambassadors team will reach out to you via email to request your assistance during various online and on campus events, most of which will take place during the second semester.

Often you will receive a gift voucher as a token of appreciation for your efforts.

  • Optional: joining the blog team

During your time at the International Student Ambassador programme, you will be presented with the opportunity to join the blog team in the second semester. This entails writing blog posts for our student-run blog, amsterdamstudents.com.
