Welmoet Boender

Education portfolio holder, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities
As an Islamologist and anthropologist with a PhD in religious studies, Welmoet Boender has an interdisciplinary academic profile perfectly suited to the fields of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Religious Studies & Theology.

She was appointed director in 2019 at the Faculty of Religion and Theology, sharing the role with the Education Portfolio Holder. From 2020 to 2023, she managed both Bachelor's programmes at the faculty. In 2024, she took on the role of quality assurance coordinator for the faculty's postgraduate and LLO education.

Her teaching and research - at Leiden, Utrecht, UvA, and since 2019 at VU Amsterdam - focus on Islam in Western Europe, with a particular interest in training Islamic religious professionals—such as imams, Islam teachers, Islamic spiritual caregivers, and Muslim theologians—navigating complex social and political landscapes. Between 2023 and 2024, she served as the initiator for developing a new higher vocational (hbo) programme for imams and Islamic religious professionals.

‘I’m excited to become fully engaged in the administrative dynamics of the new faculty, working collaboratively with a strong dose of realism and always with the common goal in mind: delivering robust programmes that train students to become academically and socially engaged, critically reflective, and analytically strong scholars.’

Anyone who knows Welmoet can attest to the energy and creativity she will bring to this new challenge. Outside of work, she enjoys treasure hunting in thrift shops and singing.
