Romy Rouwendaal, Teaching Assistant and master student Business Analytics

Alumnus
Romy Rouwendaal obtained her bachelor degree Business Analytics in 2019. She did not hesitate to pursue a master's degree in Business Analytics as well.

“When I was a child, I wanted to run my own hotel. At high school, business life still attracted me, but I also started to develop a keen interest in mathematics: the idea that hotels’ revenues can be maximized by mathematical modelling and analysing data fascinated me. However, I did not want to study pure mathematics. I attended a presentation of the study Business Analytics, although I had never heard of this study before. The program immediately caught my attention due to its unique combination of mathematics, computer science and economics. I also liked the opportunity to work on several projects during the program to gain practical expertise, to develop mathematical models for business cases and to become prepared for my future career.

“After completing my bachelor’s degree Business Analytics, I continued with the Master’s programme Business Analytics. As this programme succeeds the bachelor, the transition was naturally made. The bachelor also provides an additional minor to deepen one’s understanding of data science and to be even better prepared for the Master’s programme.

“As a Teaching Assistant I am responsible for leading the tutorials and discussion sections that complement the lectures given by the professor. I help students to gain a better understanding of the material and successfully complete the assignments by answering questions and by explaining how to solve exercises. Next to preparing for lecturing, I grade and provide feedback on students’ examinations, assignments and essays. In addition, I am the link between the professor and students; I discuss regularly with the professor and other Teaching Assistants about for example the content of the course or the grading scheme, but I also have close interaction with the students.

“After completing my Master’s degree, I would like to work for a large consulting firm, bank or trading company, because I like financial mathematics and solving complex business processes using the power of big data. I hope to work on challenging projects, in which I can bridge the gap between client demand, business proposition, analytics and technology, and that can impact humanity for the better. To approach and gain insights into issues from an international perspective, I would like to work in a diverse working environment and global team with the opportunity to travel.”
