Pinas Yoldas, 2017/2018, Cytopia: a strokeable cell in ice cream colors

Highlights from the VU Collections

Could uncontrolled cell division, as in cancer, be the answer to the quest for eternal life?

This is the question artist Pinar Yoldas came up with after she immersed herself in the scientific research in the O|2 Lab building. After the completion of this new building, the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam asked Yoldas to create a work of art that represents the research into Human Health and Life Science in a special way. She arrived at the essence of the research: cell division..

Cuddly and airy
Yoldas transformed this into a cuddly and airy artwork that stimulates the senses. Her cell in ice cream colors 'floats' over the back wall of the auditorium near the entrance of the O|2 Lab building. As a result, passersby and visitors see the artwork right when they enter.

Location-based assignments

Location-based assignments

Some works were developed specifically for a location. For example, the work Cytopia by artist Pinar Yoldas in the O|2 Lab building, focused on Life Sciences. The artwork offers a different perspective on cell division.
