Peace in Practice: Solutions for a Shared Future

How do we build peace in times of climate stress, inequality and conflict? In this session, we look at peace on three levels: the world, the community and the individual.

This session will take place from 15:45 to 16:45. Language: English.

Peace is more than the absence of conflict. In a world strained by climate crisis, war and social tensions, the question is not only how do we prevent violence, but also how do we make space for peace.

In this session, we start with the big picture: global inequality and power structures. Then we zoom in on our society, and ultimately ourselves.

Economist and theologian Jan-Jorrit Hasselaar discusses how hope and connection can contribute to international peace and security.

Then we look at peace from a community perspective. Cameroonian philosopher Pius Mosima takes us through African wisdom traditions as a source for peace, with a central role for dialogue and collective responsibility.

Psychologist Mark van Vugt shows what stress and conflict do to our brain and behaviour. How do you stay in conversation when tension mounts?

Finally, we bring all perspectives together. Master's student in Climate and Technology Law Sofia Zampedri also joins us. With contributions from scientists, policymakers, young people and activists, we search for new forms of peace.

Moderator: Lucho Rubio Repáraz.
