He specialises in global environmental politics with a focus on climate change, biodiversity, forests, and oceans. He also leads the Department of Environmental Policy Analysis at the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM), overseeing a team of 30+ researchers working on sustainability governance across domains such as water, energy, and food. Prof. Pattberg has authored or co-authored 8 books, 52 peer-reviewed articles, and 53 academic book chapters, with over 10,000 citations (h-index 46). He is co-editor of the Routledge Research Series in Global Environmental Governance, and his work is featured in leading journals like Ambio and Science.
He serves as General Director of the Netherlands Research School for Socio-Economic and Natural Sciences of the Environment (SENSE) and as a senior research fellow with the Earth System Governance Project. With 19 years of teaching experience, he currently mentors 8 PhD students and teaches across several MSc programs at VU Amsterdam. A recipient of multiple awards, including the German Political Science Association’s Science Prise, he holds a PhD (summa cum laude) from Freie Universität Berlin and advanced degrees from the University of Bonn and Johns Hopkins University (SAIS).
