In this role, he plays an important part in steering the university’s strategic direction, with a strong emphasis on enhancing the quality of education, research, and the application of knowledge. Geurts is dedicated to fostering an academic environment that promotes excellence among students, researchers, and faculty members. He is a strong advocate for interdisciplinary research and actively encourages collaboration between universities, research institutions, and societal organisations. Moreover, Geurts is deeply committed to advancing diversity and inclusion within the academic community, ensuring equal opportunities for all talented individuals.
Prior to his current role, Geurts pursued a career as a neurobiologist. He completed his studies in neurobiology with a focus on research into amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). His keen interest in clinical neurosciences led him to pursue a PhD at VU Amsterdam, where he focused on grey matter damage in multiple sclerosis (MS). As a brain researcher and Professor of Translational Neuroscience, Geurts served as the head of the Department of Anatomy & Neurosciences at Amsterdam UMC and held a professorship at the University of Calgary in Canada.
