Marc de Vries, Consultant/ Trainer at Buro voor Fysieke Arbeid

Alumnus Human Movement Sciences
Marc graduated from the VU in 1993 and now works as a consultant/trainer at Buro voor fysieke Arbeid. He came across the vacancy by chance and has now been with the company for 25 years.

"As a consultant/trainer at Buro voor Fysieke Arbeid I mainly get hired by companies. I inspire and support the company to give their employees, who do physical work, a better perspective on a pleasant and healthy career towards retirement. In close cooperation with the company I explore the possibilities to improve the work situation by making adjustments in the work process, working methods and work postures. I work in various industries (cleaning, logistics, wholesale, funeral, production, construction) and guide employees to use their bodies optimally at work. For example, I provide theoretical background on movement and physical load and train the correct movement techniques. In this way we teach employees a 'professional work posture'. The results of our work are, for example, that employees start working smarter, make better use of tools, experience less physical strain and the risks of injuries and absenteeism are reduced. For the company, of course, this is also a great result because the employees are more involved in their work."

"What I learned during my education is mainly reflected in the affinity with movement in the context of work situations. Knowledge and understanding of the movement system is very useful. Also knowledge of learning processes (formal - informal learning) help in designing good training and coaching. Analytical thinking and oral and written reporting are important things I also learned at the Human Movement Sciences programme."

A tip from Marc: "Don't worry if you don't know what you want to/can do after your studies. The fact that you have chosen Human Movement Sciences, says a lot about who you are. You also develop a lot of knowledge and various skills that you will certainly find a great job. From here, you can further develop yourself and build a very nice career.
