Kathleen Westerdijk

Director Corporate Control, KPMG
Graduated in 1996 – Bachelor in Economics and Business Economics

After completing her degree in Economics and Business Economics at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Kathleen Westerdijk chose to specialise in Accountancy. She continued her studies with a postdoctoral programme to become a certified public accountant, also at VU Amsterdam, while working at KPMG in the public accountancy practice. Over the years, she has built an impressive career in the financial sector, holding various positions at organisations such as KPMG, Feenstra and Vattenfall.
Today, she is Director Corporate Control at KPMG, where she oversees corporate control, tax affairs, treasury, and external reporting. “My work is about maintaining quality and integrity in financial processes, but also about finding the right balance between regulation, strategy, and social responsibility,” Kathleen explains. In addition to her role at KPMG, she is a member of the Complaints and Disputes Committee.

Choosing VU Amsterdam and study experience

Kathleen chose the bachelor’s in Economics and Business Economics at VU Amsterdam for its broad curriculum and the strong reputation of its Faculty of Economics. “The VU is known for its social engagement and for connecting theory to real-world practice, that really appealed to me.”

Although the Zuidas area was still developing at the time, she already recognised the advantages of its location. “Back then, the surroundings were very different from what they are now, but even then, being close to the business district provided valuable opportunities for networking and internships. Today, the Zuidas has become a dynamic hub where education, research, and professional practice come together beautifully.”

Kathleen particularly valued courses that combined theory with practical application. “Courses like Financial Reporting, Accounting Organisation and Internal Control, and Management Accounting really stood out. My thesis and the various projects I worked on taught me to think analytically and to tackle complex financial challenges.”

But it wasn’t just the academics that made her time at VU Amsterdam memorable. “The social side was just as important. Studying together in the university library, coffee breaks in the main building, and my time on the board of the faculty association, those are memories I still cherish. I’m still in touch with several classmates from that time, and those connections are invaluable.”

From study to career

Kathleen’s degree at VU proved to be a strong foundation for her professional journey. “The combination of quantitative skills, policy insights, and practical assignments prepared me perfectly for my work. I still use the analytical and problem-solving skills I developed during my studies every single day.”

In her current role, she contributes to policy development and implementation, performs analyses, and tackles complex issues in areas such as compliance, taxation, and risk management. “What I learned during my studies – critical thinking, collaboration, and the ability to navigate different perspectives, is still of great value today. The broad foundation of the programme, from auditing to strategy, continues to help me in my role as a leader.”

Advice for future students

Kathleen’s advice to future students is clear: “Choose a path that suits you, but stay curious about other areas within economics. VU Amsterdam offers plenty of opportunities to develop yourself both academically and personally.”

She also encourages students to be proactive and engaged. “Don’t be afraid to ask questions and make use of everything the university has to offer: internships, extracurricular activities, and the alumni network. Those are the experiences that shape you most, and the connections that make a difference.”

And finally: “Enjoy your student years. It’s a unique time when you not only gain knowledge but also form friendships that last a lifetime.”

“The combination of quantitative skills, policy insights, and practical assignments prepared me perfectly for my work. I still use the analytical and problem-solving skills I developed during my studies every single day.”
