The international team of VU Amsterdam’s Organisation Sciences department followed a customised course in Social Dutch, partly at the VU and partly online.

“This year, a large number of international colleagues joined our team and we are strong believers in integration. We were mainly looking for accessible, informal Dutch language classes, focusing on informal conversions, or ‘Koetjes en Kalfjes’. Our international co-workers had a class each Tuesday afternoon from 16.30 to 17.15, from the comfort of our very own lunch table, where they went over topics such as ‘introducing yourself’, ‘going to the market’ and ‘going out for dinner’. After the COVID-19 pandemic forced us to work from home starting from March 2020, the final courses took place on Zoom for Education. The participants were very happy with the course, not just because it taught them Dutch, but also because felt they were ‘all in it together’, which meant they felt very open and free when practising.”
