Dutch language

You'd like to start you career in The Netherlands. Is it necessary to master the Dutch language? And, if so, where to start?

Whether or not you should invest in learning the Dutch language varies per situation. Some companies are internationally oriented and English is the dominant language. In other offices people like to talk Dutch during their coffee break. Regardless the company culture, being able to introduce yourself in Dutch will always be appreciated if you're starting your career in The Netherlands.

We offer various language courses for international students. Check out our course programme and choose a course that suits you best! If you are a (exchange) student at VU Amsterdam, you will also receive a strongly discounted rate on the course fee. Check it out

Also: be open to opportunities to learn outside the classroom. Listen to conversations in Dutch, practise with fellow students, ask for something in the supermarket and talk to someone in the train on your way to class. Most people are happy to have a chat if they hear you'd like to practise their Mother Language!

"It varies based on the career, but for business-related careers, many job openings in the Netherlands require fluency in Dutch. However, having a master's degree opens up opportunities in international companies where knowledge of the Dutch language is not necessary."
