Together with entrepreneur Hans Brouwer and a dedicated team, he brought this technology to market. Today, there are two companies: Optics11 Industrial Sensing provides optical fibre sensors for underwater surveillance and for monitoring fire hazards in high-power transformers. Meanwhile, Optics11 Life delivers optical fibre instruments for mechanobiology research, helping scientists better understand complex diseases, such as cancer and heart dysfunctions. By 2030, our new Matrix Building will be an international symbol of innovation, and VU Amsterdam will be renowned for its spin-offs that address society’s challenges.
Driving societal innovation
VU Amsterdam spin-off Optics11 has grown into an international scale-up. During experimental research, physicist Davide Iannuzzi and his team of fellow researchers developed an optical fibre sensor that measures vibration, pressure and force with extreme precision – even in situations where other sensors fail.
