What was the main goal of your project?
The primary goal of the project was to use the Quality Funds to improve the connection between education and students' future careers. Student surveys (NSE and ISB, 2017) revealed that students were not sufficiently satisfied with the support provided for entering the job market. To address this, we invested in strengthening and expanding Career Services. The aim was to give all students access to resources such as self-assessments, and to establish a well-functioning Career Service within each faculty.
What concrete results have you achieved with your project?
At each faculty, a dedicated contact point for Career Services has been established, where students can go with all their career-related questions. Additionally, a university-wide offering has been created, ensuring that students always have access to tools such as the 123test and videos with practical tips for the application process. This continuous support helps students prepare more effectively for the job market.
What did you personally find the most beautiful or special moment during this project?
What I personally found most special about this project was the collaboration between the faculties’ Career Services and Student & Educational Affairs, as well as the introduction of university-wide resources. Tools such as the 123test are accessible to all students, providing career and vocational assessments that are valuable for both national and international students. These tests give students insight into their competencies and skills, which they can then discuss with Career Officers. Additionally, there is a strong international focus, such as the annual International Talent Event Amsterdam, where international employers meet with students.
How has this project contributed to the improvement of education at VU Amsterdam?
VU Amsterdam aims to provide students with optimal support at every stage of their academic journey, including the period after their studies. Through the expansion and enhancement of Career Services, the support available to VU students has been significantly strengthened, substantially improving both the quality of education and their preparation for future careers.

As part of the 2023-2028 Education Agenda, the VU Education Quality Plan has been developed. This quality plan aligns with the nationally established themes in the quality agreements and was created in close consultation with the participation council. Several projects have emerged from this quality plan, including this project: Career Services. We interview project leader Floor Hermsen.
