Beyond textbooks: exploring the Mixed Classroom Model with Marieke Toffolo

The Mixed Classroom Model is more than just an educational approach: it is a dynamic framework harnessing the power of diversity in classrooms, a model that builds upon different voices to enrich the learning experience for all students. Today, we sit down with Assistant Professor in Clinical Psychology, Marieke Toffolo, who puts this theory into action, creating a space where every student's voice is not only heard, but valued.

Modeling behavior you wish to see
The starting point of Marieke's implementation of the Mixed Classroom Model begins with creating an environment that encourages open dialogue. “I had a tutorial where I applied the Mixed Classroom approach directly. We immediately co-created an open learning environment, by establishing ground rules collectively. I then asked students to introduce themselves by sharing something about their background, what shaped them as a person, and their most important values,” she shared. An approach that underlines the importance of creating a foundation of trust and inclusivity, shaping a respectful learning environment. “This beautiful thing happened where everyone opened up and shared a lot more than they may have ever shared with their fellow students.”

Marieke's commitment to weaving personal stories into her education is a cornerstone of her teaching. “I also use myself a lot as an example. I try to show vulnerability, where I'm like, 'Yeah, I'm also not perfect and may have certain thoughts or ideas that are not always helpful,'” she noted, emphasizing the power of vulnerability in connecting with students. Authenticity encourages students to open up and bridges the gap between theoretical concepts and real-world applications. “Educators play a pivotal role in modeling the behavior they wish to see.”

Navigating Hot Moments
In managing potential discomfort during class discussions, Marieke champions the importance of respectful and open dialogue. Beyond merely handling challenging conversations, she emphasizes creating a collaborative atmosphere where every voice is not only heard, but valued. “As an educator, you have the responsibility to safeguard the learning environment, ensuring it remains a safe and open space for everyone.”

An example she shares involves a hot moment in the classroom, showcasing the power of calling in over calling out.

“In a recent class discussion involving a sensitive topic, I observed a student expressing strong opinions unrelated to the discussion, causing discomfort among classmates. I intervened and steered the conversation back to the main topic to protect the class environment. However, when I noticed the expressive student getting upset by this, I decided to not further discuss the matter within the classroom setting, but have a private conversation with him after class to explain my decision and ensure he felt heard as well. This created a space for the student to engage in open reflection, gain a deeper understanding of their standpoint, and why it could potentially make other students uncomfortable,” recounts Marieke.

At the core of the Mixed Classroom Model is active student engagement in defining classroom norms. “This hot moment became an opportunity for both me and the student for deep learning, defusing tension, and nurturing mutual respect”, shared Marieke.

“Hey, I’m not just a number”
Looking forward, Marieke envisions an educational landscape where educators actively engage students outside the classroom. “I hope that more teachers take the time to get to know their students and invest in them. Because I see that the students really value that, and it helps them to be motivated and open up. They feel like ‘Hey, I’m not just a number!’” she expressed, shedding light on the positive impact of educators actively participating in students' well-being and an empowering learning environment.
