Why did you choose this programme? The CMA in general, and why the CMA at the VU?
I chose the CMA because it offers a strong combination of strategic financial insight and practical management tools. As a Financial Controller in a holding environment, I was looking for a programme that goes beyond technical accounting and places the business perspective at the centre. The VU stood out because of its reputation, the structure of the programme, and its close connection to professional practice.
How do you look back on the programme and lectures?
The programme was intensive but well structured, and the lecturers were able to clearly connect theory with real-world business challenges. It was valuable to exchange ideas with professionals from different backgrounds. Some sessions were more theoretical than others, but overall the balance was good. I still have nightmares about variance analysis, but in a positive sense.
How do you use the material covered in the programme in your work? What has the programme brought you?
Quite a lot actually. Concepts such as Financial Statement Analysis, investment appraisal, and strategic planning now come up regularly in my work at GPN. The programme also helped improve my communication with senior stakeholders I now speak more often about value drivers rather than just financial results. It has given me greater confidence to challenge decisions and approach complex topics from a broader business perspective.
Are there aspects of the programme that particularly stayed with you or that you especially valued?
Several things the integration of strategy and finance, and the way the programme constantly encouraged us to look beyond our own sector. I also appreciated that the lecturers remained approachable and encouraged open discussion. The final lecture by Tineke on data analysis and AI was particularly interesting and inspired me to explore that field further. And finally the CMA community itself was a real plus smart people, serious about their work, but never too serious to skip a drink after class.
