The interaction between host and micro-organisms in the mouth

The microbiome in your mouth affects your health as a whole. Can it be used to predict who will fall ill and who will not?

Egija Zaura and Wim Crielaard of ACTA have received a grant from the University of Amsterdam to explore the unique ecosystem of the mouth.

What factors ensure the healthy development of children? Are poor eating habits the sole cause of weight gain, or does the microbiome in the mouth also play a role?

A microbiome arises in interaction with the biological properties of the individual (host). All sorts of factors influence it, such as the acidity and composition of the saliva, the immune system, genetic predisposition, and behavioural factors such as diet and oral hygiene. The microbiome has a special relationship with and impact on human health. We all have a unique ecosystem inside our mouths. And everything affects this ecosystem: a new diet, illness, improved health and so on. Or is it the other way around—does this ecosystem determine our health?

Due to the unique composition of the mouth bacteria, general measures to prevent ill-health are inadequate. The researchers are studying the ways in which an ecological balance in the mouth can ensure optimal oral health.
