Personal information

Anja Eleveld is professor social-legal studies in precarious work and poverty at the VU University. She graduated in Labour Law (cum laude) (University of Amsterdam), Political Science (University of Amsterdam) and Cultural Anthropology (Utrecht University). In 2012 she obtained her PhD at the Law Faculty of Leiden University.

 

Research

Anja has conducted social-legal research on the working conditions of platform workers, the protection of social assistance recipients, the unionization of migrant domestic workers and the reform of social security law. In her most recent research she investigates the ways in which minimum income schemes in European welfare states can adapt to the challenges posed by climate change.

Her legal research focuses on (EU) equality law and the regulation of cross border work in the EU. 

Anja is the chair of the task force Empirical Legal Studies at the Law faculty, the leader of the Research Programme Rights, Regulation and the Responsible Government and the coordinator of the Fair Expertise Centre at the social law department. 

Prizes and Awards

2025 Levenbach international publication prize in the field of labour law and social security law (period June 2023-June 2025): second prize.

2021 Levenbach international publication prize in the field of labour law and social security law (period January 2018-September 2020): first prize.

2017 Nomination for the dissertation prize (2012-2016) in the area of labour law and social security law (shortlist of five dissertations).

 

Grants

2023 NWO XS grant (Dutch organisation for science), research project 'The use of solicited oral diaries in research on workers who are vulnerable to subtle abuse and exploitation' (August 2023-August 2024)

2020 Grant for a NIAS-Gak fellowship, research project 'The meaningfulness of unfree work' (Feb-June 2021) 

In 2015  NWO Veni grant (Dutch organization for Science), research project The activating welfare state and the recipient of social assistance: the birth of a new worker in need of new rules?’ (2016-2020)
