A utopia that does not exist

Amidst the ongoing humanitarian crisis, many Venezuelans are forced to sustain their livelihoods through resource extraction, smuggling, money transfers, and trading cryptocurrencies, often at the expense of others and the environment.

These emergency practices have indirect connections to global supply chains and international organized crime, leading to substantial profits for individuals and companies perpetuating the crisis. Eva van Roekel's ethnographic research delves into the justifications behind these actions in both rural and urban areas of Venezuela. Her study aims to offer fresh insights into ethical behaviour during crises and to assess the impact of prolonged crises on the moral interplay between social and environmental justice. Listen to the podcast and read find the article below!
