This requires our continued attention and commitment. That is why we are continuously working to further strengthen social safety at VU Amsterdam, both through policy and in our day-to-day practices. In this update, we share the latest developments, including the outcomes of the listening sessions in which students shared their experiences. We also outline the next steps being taken, including measures to further strengthen student engagement and involvement.
Listening Sessions
Over the past few months, a number of students have taken part in listening sessions on social safety at VU Amsterdam. These conversations provided an opportunity for students to share their experiences, concerns and suggestions.
Several recurring themes emerged from the discussions. Students indicated that they would like greater clarity about where they can go with concerns or reports, what steps are taken afterwards, and what support they can expect throughout the process. Participants also emphasised the importance of visible follow-up, clear communication, and confidence that concerns are taken seriously and acted upon.
We would like to thank everyone who contributed to these conversations and for the openness with which they shared their experiences. The insights gathered will be used to further improve existing measures and ways of working. In the coming period, VU Amsterdam will focus in particular on the accessibility of reporting channels, communication about follow-up procedures, and support for those involved in the handling of reports and incidents.
Policies, Regulations and the Code of Conduct
The outcomes of the listening sessions will also inform a broader review of governance relating to social safety and the associated regulations, including the Student Charter and the House Rules. Where necessary, these policies and regulations will be updated or strengthened. In addition, preparations are under way for an evaluation of the VU's Code of Conduct.
Student Council Elections and Induction Programmes for Student Representatives
The two external project leads who supported the student council election campaign in April completed their evaluation in May. Based on their experiences, they have made a number of recommendations to help ensure that future elections continue to be conducted in a safe, respectful and positive environment. They also recommend strengthening collaboration between student representatives and the VU organisation throughout the year. This includes the induction process for newly elected representatives, as well as improving communication and visibility across the wider student community regarding the role, activities and achievements of student participation bodies. These recommendations will be further developed and implemented in close consultation with student representatives. We will provide an update once a concrete action plan has been agreed.
New Arrangements for the Use of StudentenD0k
StudentenD0k will remain the central hub on the VU campus where student board members and members of the University Student Council can work together, meet and develop professionally. To ensure that this shared space remains welcoming, effective and well managed for all users, the governance and user arrangements have been revised.
Since its establishment in 2012, StudentenD0k has offered a space where different student organisations can connect and collaborate. As the facility is shared by many users, a strong emphasis is placed on collective responsibility. Users work closely with the D0k management team, which is visible and approachable and oversees compliance with the agreed arrangements.
A new element is the introduction of an annual review of the use of the space. This review will consider both the extent to which organisations actively use StudentenD0k and their contribution to the wider community. In addition, quarterly user meetings and regular networking events will be organised to exchange experiences and further improve the use of the D0k together. These arrangements will help ensure that StudentenD0k remains what it is today: a vibrant shared space that is actively used and valued by students who contribute to the VU community.
