Jaana Palander is a post doc researcher at the Migration Institute of Finland in a project called ‘Intimate geographies of bordering: Deportability and its effects on Finnish citizens with foreign spouses and their extended families’ (INDEFI). She is also a lecturer at the Law School of the University of Eastern Finland, teaching basics of Finnish immigration and refugee law. She is visiting ACMRL in June 2025.
Jaana’s area of expertise is administration and public legislation related to entry and residence. She is particularly interested in the role of basic and human rights in immigration administration and legislation. Jaana’s doctoral dissertation dealt with the role of human rights in family reunification, concentrating in the overall assessment and balancing as methods in legal/administrative decision-making. In addition, she has done research on securitization of migration and asylum law and policy, as well as on regulation of climate migration. Jaana has also carried out research on legal aid for foreigners and the rights of foreign students and workers. She is currently examining the effects of family reunification legislation on intimate relations of Finnish citizens in the INDEFI project.
During her time at ACMRL, Jaana participates in a writing workshop organised by Betty de Hart, presenting her draft paper on politics of emotion in family reunification decision-making. She looks forward to get to know new people who share her interest in legal research on migration.
We’re excited to have Jaana with us and look forward to exchanging ideas and knowledge during her time as a visiting researcher.
