Professor of International Security Wolfgang Wagner and public administration expert Kristina S. Weißmüller are launching groundbreaking research projects. Their goal is to strengthen the connection between science and society, creating both scientific and social impact.
The National Science Agenda (NWA)
The NWA aims to bring science and society closer together. The topics within this agenda are partly shaped by questions from the public. Researchers, governments, social organizations, and citizens collaborate to develop and apply knowledge. By communicating scientific findings in an accessible way, the NWA seeks to increase public engagement and trust in science.
Research on Public Opinion About Defense
Project: "Armed Forces and Society" – Wolfgang Wagner
The Dutch military has undergone significant changes in recent years. While the focus was previously on international missions, such as those in Afghanistan and Mali, the priority has now shifted to defending the Netherlands and its NATO allies.
How do Dutch citizens feel about this shift? Wagner's research compares Dutch public opinion with that of citizens in Germany and Lithuania. This comparison helps to better understand how the Netherlands' views on defense and military engagement differ from those of other countries.
Artificial Intelligence in Public Services: Opportunities and Risks
Project: "VALUE-AI" – Kristina S. Weißmüller
Government agencies are increasingly using artificial intelligence (AI) to improve public services. This includes automated decisions about benefits and social assistance. But how can we ensure that AI is used fairly and reliably, without disadvantaging citizens?
The VALUE-AI project examines the risks of AI applications, particularly for vulnerable groups. By thoroughly analyzing AI systems and how experts assess risks, the project develops a new framework. This will help governments implement AI responsibly, ensuring that technology is fair, citizen-focused, and trustworthy.
