Case study: AI in Radiology: Scaling Healthcare Transformation at LUMC Hospital

Share
28 April 2025
A new teaching case based on six years of AI-driven digital transformation in the Radiology Department offers unique insights for instructors teaching executives and professionals on implementing AI solutions. It’s also valuable for practitioners and managers seeking real-life stories of AI integration.

What if we can learn from the experience of front-running companies who managed to bring artificial intelligence into the core business and workflow? How did they manage to move from exploration of various pilots to exploitation of effective use-cases? What challenge did they face and what lessons can be learned?

"AI in Radiology: Scaling Healthcare Transformation at LUMC Hospital", published by Ivey Publishing,  is the result of a research collaboration between the KIN Center for Digital Innovation and Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC). It is one of the first executive teaching cases that unpacks the complexities of reconfiguring work and organizations for successful AI implementation.

 Yasser Rahrovani (Ivey Business School, Western University), Mohammad Hosein Rezazade Mehrizi (KIN Center for Digital Innovation, VU Amsterdam) and Willem Grootjans (Radiology Department, LUMC) followed the radiology department’s pioneering efforts to integrate AI into clinical workflows—a journey that began in 2018. Over six years, multiple AI initiatives were launched, many of which became part of daily operations. This case explores the opportunities and challenges of scaling AI-driven healthcare transformation in a complex academic medical environment.

The case study is useful for:

  • Managers or (change) leaders who want to move beyond the AI hype and embed it in daily work and core business functions through a collaborative approach that engages multiple stakeholders;
  • AI change or innovation champions, advisors, or consultants who seek a grounded example from a leading professional organization managing complex decisions and partnerships;
  • Instructors teaching AI strategy, AI-driven business development, organizational transformation, or algorithmic changes to work and expertise , as the case offers rich, real-life examples of how these themes play out in practice.

Check out and access the case here.

How to order (for instructors):

  1. Register or log in as an instructor on the Ivey Publishing website (click the green icon at the top right—validation takes a few steps).
