VU Amsterdam hosts Meijo University for a workshop on aging populations and SDGs

3 September 2024
On the 30th of August, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam had the honour of hosting 19 Bachelor's students and 2 professors from Meijo University, Japan, for an intellectually enriching workshop on the "Economic Implications of Aging Populations on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) - Perspectives from the Netherlands and Japan."

The day began with a guided tour of the VU Amsterdam campus, providing participants with an overview of our academic facilities and environment. This was followed by opening remarks from Professor Theo Kocken of the VU School of Business and Economics. Professor Kocken's presentation offered profound insights into the Dutch perspective on aging and its implications for SDGs, setting a foundation for the subsequent discussions.

Professor Yuri Sadoi from Meijo University then enriched the dialogue with an in-depth analysis of the Japanese perspective on these critical issues.

The workshop featured a series of thought-provoking presentations by Meijo University students and faculty, addressing the following topics:

  1. Life Planning for Young People: Strategies for navigating an era characterized by increased life expectancy and the prospect of living to 100 years.
  2. The NL-Japan Pension System: Comparative analysis of pension frameworks and their sustainability in the context of aging populations.
  3. The Different Types of Elderly Populations: Examining differences in retirement patterns, healthcare access, and social support systems among different groups of elderly people.
  4. Future Challenges of Dementia: Examination of emerging issues related to dementia and their impact on societal structures.

These sessions highlighted the imperative for innovative solutions and adaptive strategies to meet the challenges posed by aging societies while advancing sustainable economic development.

The event concluded with a dynamic Q&A session, fostering cross-cultural dialogue and collaborative discussion. Professor Shino Ota from Meijo University provided the closing remarks, reflecting on the day’s exchanges and future prospects for international collaboration.

We extend our sincere gratitude to all participants and contributors who made this workshop a success. Your insights are invaluable as we continue to address these pressing global challenges.
