VU-student Jason selected for Vulcanus in Japan programme

17 May 2024
The Vulcanus in Japan programme is an industry-oriented student exchange program for EU students. VU Amsterdam is proud to announce that our student Jason Winter was selected! Below you can read the interview we had with him.

1. Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your academic background?
I am currently advancing my studies with a master's degree in Computer Science at VU Amsterdam, following the track 'Foundations of Computing and Concurrency.' This track has allowed me to explore the more theoretical aspects of computer science. My interest extends beyond theory into practical applications, particularly in cybersecurity and artificial intelligence. My academic foundation was laid with a Bachelor's degree from VU Amsterdam in Computer Science, where I followed the minor 'deep programming.' Completing my undergraduate studies and receiving cum laude recognition was a deeply rewarding experience that has further motivated me in my continued academic endeavours.

2. Why did you apply for the Vulcanus in Japan programme?
My application to the Vulcanus in Japan programme stems from a desire to bridge my academic and professional interests with a unique cultural and technological experience. Japan’s pioneering role in technology, particularly in areas relevant to my studies and interests, presents a great opportunity for growth and learning.

3. Do you have any connections or specific interests with Japan?
Japan has always intrigued me with its seamless integration of cutting-edge technology and deep-rooted historical traditions. This fascination is aided by frequently encountering Japanese contributions to computer science in academic literature, highlighting the country's technological expertice.

4. Which aspects of Japanese work culture are you most interested in learning about?
I am keen to immerse myself in Japan's work culture, known for its dedication and passion. As someone with a strong work ethic and a deep passion for computer science, I am excited to experience and learn from Japan's dynamic and high-pressure work environments firsthand.

5. Can you tell us about your internship position and host company?
My upcoming internship at Fujitsu Limited offers me the privilege of exploring the intersections between artificial intelligence and advanced computing technologies. As a distinguished leader in the supercomputing domain, Fujitsu presents an unparalleled opportunity for me to both contribute to and learn within this innovative field.

6. How will this internship fit into the framework of your future career prospects?
This internship is a perfect match for my academic and professional interests, spanning theoretical computer science, system-level programming, and artificial intelligence. It promises to enhance my research capabilities in these fields, preparing me for a future of innovative contributions. Additionally, working with a tech giant like Fujitsu and its esteemed team offers invaluable practical experience that textbooks alone simply cannot provide.

7. What do you hope to do after completing this internship?
After my internship, I aim to finish my master's degree and embark on a career that merges theoretical insights with practical applications in computer science. Ideally, this path will steer me towards a collaborative or company-sponsored PhD programme.

8. What was the selection and interview process like? Any tips for future candidates?
The selection and interview process for the Vulcanus in Japan programme was an enriching experience that underscored the importance of thorough preparation. This process encouraged me to carefully consider every aspect of my application, from ensuring timely submission of various requirements to thoughtfully presenting my professional qualifications and personal characteristics. Additionally, familiarizing myself with Japanese interview etiquette enriched my understanding and approach. I recommend this thoughtful preparation to future candidates, as it was a crucial part of my application journey.

9. What are you most excited about living in Japan?

The prospect of immersing myself in Japan's rich culture and history is what excites me the most. There's something incredibly appealing to me about experiencing the quiet beauty of its historic temples and exploring streets that echo centuries of history. I'm equally eager to engage with Japan's vibrant pop culture, especially experiencing the lively atmosphere of Akihabara's electronic markets. Additionally, I'm excited to try the wide variety of Japanese cuisine, exploring flavours and dishes unique to Japan. Moreover, the opportunity to enhance my Japanese language skills in this immersive environment is something I'm really looking forward to. It's this blend of cultural, historical, culinary, and linguistic experiences that I find so appealing about living in Japan.
