Scaling Innovation: Fieldlabs@Scale Meets at Brainport Industries

Share
10 December 2024
On Tuesday, November 26th, stakeholders from the Fieldlabs@Scale project gathered at the Experience Center in the Brainport Industries Campus (BIC), a hub for innovation and cross-industry collaboration in high-tech manufacturing — an ideal setting to explore the fieldlab ecosystem.

The day began with opening remarks from Hans Berends, followed by an introduction by John Blankendaal, Managing Director of Brainport Industries. Blankendaal highlighted the role of Brainport Industries as a network organization connecting the high-tech manufacturing supply chain, with expertise in producing high-mix, low-volume, and highly complex systems.

Mark van Lieshout then shared his vision for the Experience Center's Factory of the Future, emphasizing its mission on driving innovation in high-tech manufacturing. Van Lieshout also led participants on a tour of the BIC, where participants visited several fieldlabs. These labs facilitate collaboration between companies, research institutes, and universities on cutting-edge innovation projects for the high-tech manufacturing industry.

After the tour, Hans Berends and Hannah Fults (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, KIN Center for Digital Innovation) presented a framework categorizing fieldlabs based on their development trajectories for scaling innovations. Orlando Vazquez Villegas (Eindhoven University of Technology) followed with preliminary findings on governance mechanisms for implementing open innovation. Finally, Luca Vadacca (University of Twente) shared insights from research into factors enabling fieldlabs to generate both, economic and social value.

The event concluded with a networking reception, giving participants an opportunity to exchange ideas and reflect on the day’s discussions.
