Expert Meeting on the CERD-CMW Joint General Recommendation/Comment

Share
30 October 2024
In cooperation with the Committees on Migrant Workers (CMW) and the Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD), the ACMRL was proud to organise an expert meeting to contribute to the significant initiative aimed at addressing and combating xenophobia in relation to migration.

The expert meeting is part of the process of drafting a joint CMW-CERD General Recommendation/Comment Nos. 7 and 8, focusing specifically on the establishment of comprehensive public policies to combat xenophobia and its broad impact on the rights of migrants, their families and other non-nationals who may be perceived as different on racial or intersectional grounds.

The joint initiative is crucial as it seeks to provide authoritative guidance to combat xenophobia in a global context where human mobility fundamentally shapes societies. As human mobility is a complex and multidimensional phenomenon, this Recommendation/Commentary seeks to address the pervasive impact of xenophobia on communities and human rights worldwide.

Key objectives of the meeting were to gather valuable insights and substantive contributions from ACMRL and VU experts to inform and refine the drafting of this critical recommendation/commentary. With Pablo Ceriani Cernadas representing CMW and Tina Stavrinaki attending on behalf of CERD, we had fruitful discussions.

For more details and information on the recommendation/commentary and its first consultation phase, please visit the OHCHR website: https://www.ohchr.org/en/calls-for-input/2024/call-submissions-concept-paper-cerd-cmw-joint-general-commentrecommendation
