18 July 2024
The Society for the Scientific Study of Reading awarded biological psychologist Elsje van Bergen the Carol Connor Mid-Career Award 2024. Van Bergen is associate professor in biological psychology and educational genetics at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. The award was presented during the society’s annual conference held in Copenhagen this July.

Van Bergen's research focuses on the complex interplay between genetic predispositions and environmental experiences in shaping learning and neurodevelopmental conditions, including dyslexia, dyscalculia, and ADHD. Her interdisciplinary approach integrates theories and methods from psychology, education, and genetics to unravel the causes and consequences of individual differences in child development and learning. She is particularly interested in intergenerational transmission.

Throughout her career, Van Bergen has secured numerous important grants, including a Rubicon, VENI, and VIDI from the Dutch Research Council (NWO), as well as an ERC Starting Grant from the European Research Council. These achievements highlight her significant contributions to the scientific community and her potential for continued impactful research.

The Carol Connor Mid-Career Award recognizes Van Bergen's exceptional ability to transcend traditional disciplinary boundaries in her research. This honour acknowledges her outstanding contributions to the field of reading research, which includes her dedication to fostering the development of early-career researchers, alongside her groundbreaking scientific work.

This international award highlights the cutting-edge work being conducted at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam in the Department of Biological Psychology, which hosts the Netherlands Twin Register and the research master Genes in Behaviour and Health.
