AI literacy help with AIMES

Share
10 September 2024
How can we use AI to enrich our education? What opportunities does it offer, and what objections should we consider? And how can we prepare our students for a world where AI is an everyday tool?

There are many initiatives and pilots running within VU Amsterdam to use AI tools ethically. To use AI properly, AI literacy is very important. This is the ability to understand and use AI applications. To increase this AI literacy of lecturers, programme directors and faculty administrators, the AI Maturity in Education Scan (AIMES) is currently being developed. This joint initiative of the UvA and VU Amsterdam has been running since January 2024. Initiator and project leader Luuk Terbeek talks about developments within the project.

Quick insight and feedback via AIMES
The initiative to develop the scan arose well before the launch of ChatGPT 3.5 in November 2022. This launch accelerated everything. Luuk: "At that time, I was already working with colleagues on an ethical framework based on the seven requirements for trustworthy AI. To increase the impact of this ethical framework, an activating concept was needed. This led to the development of AIMES." The scan provides participants with instant insight into the extent of effective, efficient and responsible applications of AI in their education.

AIMES consists of three separate questionnaires, each aimed at a specific target group: teachers, programme directors and faculty administrators. After completion, participants receive feedback on where they stand. In addition, participants also receive immediate feedback and tips for their own educational context. This way, participants gain more insight into the application possibilities of AI in education and become aware of how to deal with privacy issues and ethical considerations.
