Facing the Hydra: Advancing Research Methods in the Social Sciences
My thesis focuses on improving methods in social science research. I was motivated to work on this after completing my first experiment, where I encountered several methodological problems for which the current literature did not have ready solutions.
First, I was curious to investigate the use of incentives to create real stakes for the choices participants make in experiments, and the effect of these real stakes on experimental results. Second, I wanted to establish whether it is important to use equivalence testing methods to test whether null results are sufficiently precise. Additionally, I investigated whether businesses that respond to business surveys are meaningfully different from those that do not.
